These beautiful creatures are called Hippocampus (coiled horse). I didn't know these mythical creatures existed when I came up with the idea for this painting; I was inspired to add a mermaid tail to a photograph I had taken of a leaping horse. At first I was going to depict the horses in a water ballet, but then the expressions of the horses made me feel they were protecting something, and thus I added the ruins of an Atlantean city.
